When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. — 1 Corinthians 13:11 The counseling ministry of GRPC exists to help fulfill the vision of GRPC to develop mature disciples through the use of God’s word to dispense the grace and wisdom necessary to fix broken live, mend the wounds, and heal the hurting so that people will restored back into a right relationship with Jesus Christ. The counseling ministry also produces encouragement as we "spur one another on to love and good deeds". - Heb. 10:24 The process to maturity in Christ is life-long, and unfortunately the effects of sin in our lives often waylay us. This often results in hurting and brokenness, especially brokenness in relationships and in our relationship to Christ. This leaves us guilty and alone as Satan isolates us and continues to manipulate the downward spiral of sin. We turn away from Christ and can no longer hear or don’t want to hear the Holy Spirit. His Word has no meaning if we even read it, and prayer is often avoided or misguided. We become fruitless. Part of GRPC’s vision statement identifies the need to fix the broken lives, mend the wounds, and heal the hurting by dispensing grace, encouragement and empathy when and as needed. The methodology of this is biblically based, pointing people to the excellency of Christ and the sufficiency of God’s Word to heal and restore. Biblical counseling addresses the heart issues and always brings hope through Christ so that by God’s grace the counselee will come to confess the sinfulness, repent and seek God’s forgiveness, be restored into that right relationship with Christ, and become a fruit bearing disciple. Mature disciples are fruit-bearing Christians because Christ has the preeminence in their lives. This is the counseling process needed to restore a person back into a right and fruitful relationship with Jesus Christ so that the spiritual goals for God’s people become the focus. "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Rom. 15:13 The counseling that is done at GRPC includes every facet of life: pre-engagement/pre-marital, marital, family, financial, career, individual issues (fear of man, sexual abuse, etc.) Those who counsel are leaders in the church including our three pastors, but most of the counseling is currently being handled by certified biblical counselors who have been trained at the Christian Counseling Education Foundation (CCEF) in Glenside, PA. Bruce and Carol Marker, the two main people in charge of counseling at GRPC, have been married for 31 years. They have two sons, both married, and now have a grandson. They have been members of Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church since 1986. They have both served in many ministries including youth group, Sunday School teachers, men’s and women’s bible studies, and choir. Carol is currently serving in the leadership of WIC overseeing the counseling/mentoring ministry. Bruce has been a Ruling Elder since 1991 and currently serves part-time on the staff of GRPC as the Family Life Director and a staff counselor. Bruce and Carol have been involved in mission trips to Japan and have been involved in leading a house church since 1995. They are graduates of the Christian Counseling Education Foundation in Glenside, Pa. where they earned a two year certificate in biblical counseling. They have been involved in counseling both formally and informally for over 10 years. |
