Dominican Republic - Jarabacoa Christian School
In 1999 Dr. Phil Redwine, the then director of Escuele Caribe, had a dream of giving
something back to the community of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic in the form of
education. Dr. Redwine worked for New Horizon Youth Ministries, headquartered in
Indiana, and was the long time director of this special school for troubled American
teens located in this very Catholic community in the middle of the DR. In the next
year, Jarabacoa Christian School opened with 66 students from kindergarten to fourth
grade in a small building on the grounds of Escuele Caribe. Growth forced the school
to eventually move across town and rent the small buildings with a small play ground
area. As more growth was projected plans for a bigger, more modern school building
were developed, and a piece of property was purchased.
In May of 2004, over 50 members of GRPC traveled to Jarabacoa over a two week period
to build a large two story school building and help transform a muddy, weed infested
lot into a beautiful campus like setting. The story behind this event is an
incredible testimony of the Holy Spirit orchestrating the fruition of a visioin.
This September, JCS will open with 230 students in grades pre-K through 10th. These
children receive a very Christ-centered education primarily taught in English using
the A-beka curriculum and the Bible. The school now offers a full range of sports for
the children, and for the first time this past year traveled to other parts of the DR
to play other schools. The school is continuing to enjoy a good reputation for
education and training of children even among this small city where Catholic education
is very prominent. The motto for JCS is "Families, Faith, Future."
Prayer Requests
- Stability of leadership.
- Long term strategic planning for student growth and building expansion.
- Developing students to be fruit for God's kingdom among their peers outside of JCS,
and to become the future leaders who will be a light for Jesus in the DR.
